THOMAS A KEMPIS wrote, “The devout man has Jesus with him everywhere to be his comforter, and to him he says: ‘Be near me, Lord Jesus, always and everywhere.’ ” These are moving words and indeed a prayer we can carry with us wherever we go. Although we have the assurance of Christ’s presence with us at all times and in all places, there are moments when we know we cannot engage the world without withdrawing from it. Journeying with a child who is ill is not easy. It demands our attention, love, and self-giving. A person cannot give continuously without running dry. This is the place where all we can do is pray. …
Dare to be honest when you speak with God: allow your feelings and emotions to find expression. You do not have to be politically or theologically correct; God is big enough to understand where you come from and why you say certain things. … Be quiet and listen, trusting that your prayer is heard. Being in the presence of God in open conversation is God’s gift to you.
