On Being Holy

Today’s Reflection

HOLINESS IS at play when people draw attention to the truth of God simply by being …

Saint Francis of Assisi took a novice out for a day of preaching the gospel. As they left Assisi, they helped a farmer move his cart; down the road they talked with a merchant and listened to his problems; around noon they shared their meal with a hungry beggar; soon after lunch they prayed with a sick woman; on their way back, they helped a woman carry her heavy load. When they returned to the monastery at dark, the novice commented that the day was gone and they hadn’t preached to anyone. “My son,” Francis responded, “we’ve been sharing the gospel all day long.”

I pray for MiJa and Gregory, for peace and understanding in our relationship. In Jesus name I pray, Amen.

This weekend our church participates with other churches in an ecumenical breakfast for Christian unity. I pray that love, peace and harmony abound. Help us Lord as we share your love with others who also believe in you. In your name I pray, Amen.

A friend is feeling overwhelmed at work. I feel helpless to offer kind words as there is minimal advice to give. Father, help me not to underestimate the power of prayer and that Your hand is in this. Lead her as she seeks other options. Help me to know any way to support her.

What a timely devotion. In my travels this week, I’ve was blesses with an opporunity to literally “carry someone’s load” and also to simply listen about his health problems. I didn’t try to share the word although I think I should have tried. If nothing else, it was a blessing to me to help him.

Recently, I was at the taxi queue and saw an elderly lady with heavy bags of groceries. I helped her to carry her groceries and let her go before me. Later, I also helped her to carry her groceries into the taxi.

Hope I make a positive difference that day.

Father God, thank you for teaching us to be kind. Help us to reflect your kindness to strangers and even to people who are difficult to love.

I have had the opportunity to help one of the staff member who cleans my office. This meditation reminds me that even a cup of cold water, given in Christ’s name, is the communication of the gospel.
