New every morning is your love, great God of light, and all day long you are working for good in the world. Stir up in us desire to serve you, to live peacefully with our neighbors and all your creation, and to devote each day to your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

Today’s Reflection

IN VIRTUALLY EVERY BENEDICTINE COMMUNITY, we see the affirmation, “Treat everyone as Christ.” This statement illuminates the heart of the Benedictine ethic and the hospitality for which many know it. Benedictine hospitality stems from the belief that Christ is present as guest and host in every encounter. …

We can see our spouses, friends, children, grandchildren, coworkers, and strangers as God’s beloved children, treating them always – and even in difficult situations – as we would treat Christ. Our actions matter because they impact our neighbors’ spiritual growth. They shape the quality of God’s experience of the world.

Now, being in a much smaller church and enmeshed in a small group, the body of Christ has been such a support for me the past several months. Emails, texts, cards – such encouragement, just seemingly at the right time. Very grateful.
Infusion is no longer an option for my mom. There is relief there. She must wait four weeks for the chemo to vacate her body. May 31 in the next appointment with the oncologist, at which point a decision will be made as to whether to continue with the pill portion of the chemo regimen. During these next four weeks she can hopefully begin to regain strength. Taking the pill only increases her odds 10% of the cancer not coming back within 2-5 years and I don’t know where she and dad will be with this. We all wait expectantly for her appetite to return. The doctor said it could be up to another week until this happens.
Grateful to see the relief on dad’s face yesterday afternoon. Grateful to know he is going golfing with some of his golf buddies tomorrow while my sister sits with mom. Grateful for a good night’s rest.

Four years ago now, I did a five day retreat at a Benedictine community of nuns, which is where I learned Lectio Divina and chose a Lectio Divina passage. The Benedictine concept of hospitality, and all the Benedictine “rules”, are an inspiring, beautiful way to strive to live a life of simplicity and service.

Thank you for your prayers while I was on a road trip with a few friends. My daughter and I have not re-connected. She told me last week she needed space. I am still taken aback at the sudden reversals on her part and pray to learn how to navigate what feels like a minefield. I pray to know what I can do. What is it about me that I need to tend to, and what can I do to take care of myself when my daughter slams the door on me? She refuses to see a therapist together. I am anguished. I saw my grief therapist yesterday.

May I see Christ in my daughter.

I pray for Jill and her mother, father and sister; Lou and her children; Robert, Erich and Anneliese; Julie’s health and home situation; Connie and her grieving cousin; Mary and her parents and new job; and for other UR friends not named here. Blessings.

Thank you for your prayers. Give your daughter time, she will see how much you love her. God works all things out.

I try to live this way and I ask God daily to help me with this. I especially wish I could see God in my home situation. However, when someone mistreats you constantly, I struggle with how to be true to myself and remain safe while also living God’s words.
Prayers for Gloria and her appetite. Prayers for Jill, Larry and Becky and for life returning to a new normal. May you all support one another.
Prayers for Andrea and her daughter. Thankful for safe travel for Andrea. Difficulties with our children seem to pull at our heartstrings the most. We remember when they were young and we were their world. Prayers that your daughter relents and goes to therapy with you.
Prayers and blessings for and thank you to all of the UR family
To each, his own is beautiful.

I see Christ in my friend, Sherry. She is very smart and knows the Bible. She “says it like it is” and always in a quiet voice. I love her and her family as if they were my own.
    Thankful for:
A blooming tree across the street (Cherry, Pear, I get mixed up–it is shaped like an open umbrella)
    The absolutely gorgeous weather.
A funeral service today that will “Give God the Glory” Amen
That Jill’s Mom has a respite.
    Julie’s Latin Proverb

Better late than never. Was up at 2:50 am as Pearl came for a visit, fed her and went back to sleep, then woke up just in time for the day’s activities, had a long but good day, visited a few places on the trip with my son, back home at 6 pm.

There are times when I think I can and do see Christ in everyone. As humans we can’t always be Christ, there are a lot of reasons for this, but there are also as many reasons why Christ appears in us when He does. When and why Christ appears is also hard to understand.

As believers I think we try more often to let Christ in, but only God knows that for sure.

Prayers for Gloria and Larry, may God’s wisdom be their’s as they make decisions. I pray too for Gloria to regain strength. A blessing Larry could play golf with a friend. God’s peace to Jill, Becky, Larry, and especially Gloria.

May God’s understanding and patience come to Andrea and her daughter.

Thankful for Connie’s friend Sherry. Prayers for Connie’s cousin. The hints of spring are always appreciated.

Prayers for Julie, her hands, foot, and well being. That Latin proverb is very true. Mary her job and parents, Lou, her children and the move, Marcy, Rusty and K, and all the UR family are in my prayers. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
