New every morning is your love, great God of light, and all day long you are working for good in the world. Stir up in us desire to serve you, to live peacefully with our neighbors and all your creation, and to devote each day to your Son, our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.

Today’s Reflection

MY FIRST ENCOUNTER with Jesus’ amazing love came over two decades ago, when my first marriage was crumbling. Though I was an agnostic at the time, one afternoon I knelt down beside our bed, weeping, and heard myself cry out almost involuntarily, “Jesus, please help me.” In the wake of that prayer a peace flooded over me that did pass all understanding. In the months that followed that awesome experience, the fabric of my life continued its relentless unraveling. My heart broke as my husband decided to leave our home and our marriage. Yet spiritually I experienced this time as one of great blessing. Immersing myself in the Bible day after day and late into the night, several translations of scripture and dozens of theological commentaries piled all over the desk, I had one goal in mind: to learn to listen to Jesus.

One night a frightening thought hit me: Aren’t you afraid of going crazy, shutting yourself up all alone like this with all these books, night after night after night? In response, I heard a reassuring voice with the ears of my heart: Keep focusing on me in those Gospel stories. Pay attention to my effect on people, the way I healed them and brought them to new wholeness. You have nothing to fear if you’re centered in me. Just keep listening. Gradually, as I listened to the many different “voices” I heard, I learned to distinguish between the whispered words of the Holy Spirit and the thoughts that reflected my anxious fears. I came to understand that the Holy Spirit would always point me to the Bible and make Jesus’ voice alive to me.

That is a good question. As I related yesterday, I felt that God was speaking to me through the reflection and another thing I read. I feel God speaks to me through things I read or hear over and over at certain times. God knows I need to be clobbered with His messages.
Prayers for Robert and Erich. I pray Robert is no longer having neck pain and Erich’s job remains all he hopes.
Prayers for Jill and her students aas well aas her family.
Prayers for Mary and her work situation. I pray it has improved.
Prayers for Marcy. Tazzie is on my lap which means I am in an awkward position to type today. I would rather be awkward. He is purring which I tell him is like he is whispering sweet nothings to me.
Prayers for aall of the wonderful UR family, I hear God in your voices for you have helped me grow in my faith and as a person.

Today’s question is a tough one. Don’t hear God’s voice in human ways, have felt God’s presence twice and make it through each month because of God. I find expressing spiritual things difficult, often there are no words that fit.

Thankful things are going well for Erich at his job, the tents were set up at church despite some rain, and I think the weather will be cooler and less humid for he next few days. Lawnfest and Erich going off to work have changed my daily routine a bit, but I’m thankful to be able to read and post here.

Prayers for Gloria and Larry, Marcy, Julie, Jill and Becky, Andrea and Lowell, Andrea’s daughter and grandson, Betsy, Connie, Lou, and all those who come to the UR. Put God first and all your needs will be met. Thank You, Lord.

The Reflection today hits close to home. However, in my case my faith got even stronger. God works in mysterious ways His wonders to perform.
I don’t believe I have ever heard His voice, except through answered prayers, but once at a spiritual retreat I raised my hand and He touched it. I don’t share this, in fact never have, but I feel safe here and know that I will not be scoffed at.
    Thankful for:
    Sunshine after the Rain.
Hungry Hummingbirds filling their stomachs, possibly preparing to leave sometime soon.
A Labor Day Weekend on the horizon. How can that be?
